Please come and enjoy a great feast with us on the nights of August 12th -18th beginning at 8 pm in Turkish Cultural Center of Rochester.

Our aim is to provide a better understanding of the Turkish culture, and help participants explore the 14-centuries-old tradition of Iftar, a dinner breaking the fast of Ramadan. Because Ramadan is a time to spend with friends and family, the fast will be broken by coming together to share an evening meal. As a Turkish community we would like to have the people around us to experience this unique feeling and have a dinner with us in a friendly and peaceful atmosphere. Gathering around a table together in a dialogue environment is very useful for starting and establishing good relations among the different communities and beliefs. Learning from each other we can build bridges of mutual trust and understanding. It is with this intention that these Ramadan dinners are being held.

The Art of Patience

One of the most unique and beautiful forms of art is Ebru, or water marbling. Ebru is formed by drawing designs with dye on top of water, and then carefully placing paper on the surface of the water in order to absorb the dye.The earliest examples of Ebru are found in the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, and are dated 1539, but the detail and quality of the work suggests that Ebru was present long before this time in the Ottoman Empire. Ebru has traditionally been rarely signed, and therefore many great artists remain unnamed. Modern day students may study for more than 10 years before being considered master marblers, learning how to make the perfect dye, water bath, and design. Since each dye bath can only be transferred to paper once, every original piece of Ebru is unique.

The first step in Ebru is getting the perfect dye. Dyes are created from various organic substances. Soil from Istanbul, white lead, indigo from Pakistan, and red ochre are used to create the perfect color. 24-karat gold may be added to the dye in order to provide shimmer and shine. The dye is mixed with ox-gall, and water, an art form in itself, since each dye is unique depending on the time of year collected, its age, and its fineness. Ebru artists often spend years simply learning the art of mixing dye, before ever attempting their first marble.

BBQ with Friends of Türkiye

The Turkish Cultural Center of Rochester (TCCR) had the honor to organize a barbeque picnic for the friends of Türkiye and TCCR. The event took place on May 17, at the premises of TCCR. Our guests ranged from college students to community leaders, such as Brighton Town Supervisor Sandra Frankel. We were able to overcome the weather obstacle as apparently people were willing to attend the event regardless.

The theme that related all the guests was their common relation to Türkiye. Some of them were students from the Turkish class, some were visitors of Türkiye from previous years, others related to Türkiye through the cultural center.

Some of the visitors were from Nazareth College, with whom TCCR has an affiliation. Dr. Eisen of Nazareth College focused on the relation between Nazareth and TCCR and he said he was very happy to witness such a wonderful collaboration between the two. Again this year, a group of professors from Nazareth will visit Türkiye as part of their trip “On the Footsteps of the Prophets”.

Brighton Town Supervisor Sandra Frankel appreciated the friendship with TCCR. Soon Brighton and Mudanya, a town in the Bursa province in Türkiye, are planning to finalize a sister city project which started this year.

This was only the first of the series of Friends of Turkiye programs planned by TCCR.

NY State Senator Joseph Robach visited TCCR

New York State Senator Joseph Robach paid a visit to the Turkish Cultural Center of Rochester (TCCR) on Friday January 28. It was the fist time Senator Robach visited the new building of TCCR. He was welcomed by the President of TCCR Ahmet Celenli, the Director of the cultural center Fuat Mese and many other members.

Senator Robach visited the new offices and facilities of the new building. At dinner representatives from different departments of TCCR and sister organizations gave information to the senator about the mission and the many activities organized by each.

The Event Coordinator at TCCR gave information about the cultural events, interfaith dialogue programs and trips to Turkiye that are continuously being organized. He thanked Senator Robach for being a very good friend of the Turkish community and TCCR.

TABID (Turkish American Business Improvement & Development) representatives invited senator Robach to visit Turkiye to enhance business between the State of New York and Turkiye to more strengthen ties between the countries.

Women’s Council at TCCR enthusiastically told about the activities they are having, including the weekend school, cooking club and many other formal and informal gatherings.

Çanakkale Şehitleri Rochester’da Anildi

TCC Rochester tarafından düzenlenen ve Eğitimci yazar Vehbi Vakkasoğlu nun konuşmacı olarak katıldığı Bir destandır Çanakkale isimli programa Rochester da yaşayan Türkler ypğun ilgi gösterdi.26 Mart 2011 Cumartesi günü saat 7 pm de gerçekleşen program TCC Rochester ana binasında düzenlendi. Yaklaşık 200 kişinin katıldığı program misafirlere ikram ile başladı.İkramdan sonra programa geçildi.Program Kur an-ı Kerim tilavetiyle başladı .Kur an-ı Kerim tilavetinden sonra büyük bir coşkuyla İstiklal Marşı okundu.Daha sonra Çanakkale destanının siirsel bir dille anlatıldığı slayt gösterisi seyredildi.Slayt esnasında misafirlerin duygulandılar ve gözyaşlarına hakim olamadılar.Daha sonra TCC Rochester haftasonu okulu öğrencilerinin hazırladıkları Hasan Çavuşa mektup skeci sahnelendi.Skeçte Çanakkale savaşı esnasında asker annelerinin oğullarına yazdıkları Yüreklendirme mektuplarını canlandırdılar.Skeç oynarken birçok misafirin ağladığı görüldü.

Skeçten sonra TCC Rochester haftasonu okulu öğrencilerinden oluşan çocuk korosu sahne aldı.Çocuk korosu seslendirdiği Çanakkale içinde parçasıyla izleyenlerden büyük beğeni topladı.

Gecenin beklenen misafiri Yazar Vehbi Vakkasoğlu alkışlar eşliğinde çıktığı sahnede yaklaşık bir buçuk saat konuşma yaptı.Konuşmasında Çanakkalede zaferi kazandıran ruhun anlaşılması halinde bugün çoğu zorluğun aşılacağını ve o ruh ile kadının kocasına kocanın karısına davranışının düzelebileceğini ifade etti.Yokluklar içindeki bir milletin inanç ve imanıyla neleri yapabileceğini verdiği örneklerle anlattı.

Günümüzün Çanakkalesi yani son kalesinin aile olduğunu belirten Vakkasoğlu aile yıkıldığı takdirde hiç bir şeyin düzgün kalamayacağını söyleyen yazar Çanakkalede fedakarlıklarıyla destanlaşan analardan bir kaç örnekle bunu anlatmaya çalıştı.

Misafirlerin beğeniyle dinledikleri konferans Yazar Vehbi Vakkasoğlu nun kitap imza töreniyle sona erdi.

Turkish Day at the Rochester City Hall

This year the Turkish Cultural Center (TCCR) organized the third Turkish Day at the Rochester City Hall. Besides the Turkish food and arts crafts exhibition, this years’ spotlight was the folkloric dance performed by the students of Rochester Academy Charter School. The American students surprised everyone with their colorful and professional performance. The same day TCCR was presented a proclamation by the City of Rochester, recognizing the work of the cultural center in promoting the Turkish Culture and bringing closer the Turkish-American and American communities in Rochester.
